William got a job as a stewart on a steamer and was able to pay back $2 to Markham. He was sorry he couldn't get a present for Virgil for Christmas. He is waiting for Markham's Easter Book.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
